The state patrol said that alcohol played a factor in a single-vehicle wreck on State Route 302 that left to Gig Harbor teenagers with major injuries last week.

Ronald G. Gunther and Conner L. Mathis, both 17, were taken to separate area hospitals before Mathis was eventually airlifted to Harborview Medical Center.

According to the state patrol, Gunther was behind the wheel of a gray 2002 Jeep Cherokee while heading westbound and left the roadway at Milepost 2.1, about four miles southeast of Belfair, and struck a tree. He was taken to Harrison Hospital with internal injuries.

Mathis, meanwhile, also had internal injuries and was taken to Mason General Hospital in Shelton before being airlifted to Harborview. Hospital officials said Monday afternoon that he was in satisfactory condition.

The wreck occurred at about 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 10.

According to the state patrol, the wreck was caused by speeding and alcohol, and charges are still pending.
