Graduates turn their tassels, gear up for their next challenges
280 Shelton Highclimbers reach a pinnacle
CLASS OF 2016 GRADUATION
About 280 Shelton High School seniors received their diplomas Saturday at the school's 107th commencement ceremony at Saint Martin's University in Lacey.
Relatives and friends clutching flowers, balloons and cameras packed the Marcus Pavilion to cheer on the class of 2016.
Shelton High School Principal Jennifer Deyette congratulated the school's staff for helping the graduates meet their milestone.
As for the students, "It's been an honor to travel this path with you," she said.
The first-year principal encouraged the graduates to lead by example.
"We are proud to be Shelton High-climbers," said Deyette, prompting whoops from the graduates.
The class of 2016 featured two valedictorians — Lindsey Goldsby and Mark Vernon — who finished their high school careers with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Goldsby told her fellow graduates they should follow the example of cats. Felines are adaptable, climb to the top through perseverance and fight back even when they are scared, she said.
"The most important lesson we learn from cats is they always land on their feet," Goldsby said.
Vernon thanked the staff members from every school the students attended. Lunch ladies and janitors were among the employees he singled out for their help.
Vernon, who will be attending the University of Washington, ended his speech with the words, "Thank you. Go Huskies!"
Sgt. Major Dan Hernandez was the staff speaker, chosen by the students.
Hernandez told the audience there are three types of students: intenders, endeavorers and performers. He urged them to be performers.
"The difference between is commitment," he said.
Hernandez concluded his speech with the words, "Good luck and god speed!"
Superintendent Alex Apostle advised the graduates to look for strengths in others and be kind even when it isn't easy. Also, "Never forget where you came from," he said.
