Medevac service celebrates 30 years

Guardian Air, a member of Northern Arizona Healthcare, is celebrating its 30th anniversary in August.

Guardian Air is a nonprofit, hospital-based air transport company that provides specialized life-saving care for adult, pediatric, maternal and neonatal patients.

With seven bases across Northern Arizona, Guardian Air covers the entire region and beyond.

Since 1985, the company has grown from one airplane completing 56 flights, to a fleet of seven Bell 407 helicopters and one Pilatus PC 12 fixed-wing aircraft, completing more than 2,280 flights in 2014. This past February, one flight crew delivered a baby above Mt. Elden in route to Flagstaff Medical Center.

Guardian Air is also actively engaged in community outreach and educational activities. Working with local police, fire and ambulance agencies across the region, the company has helped train thousands of health care providers, first responders and volunteers in CPR, mass casualty response and other life-saving techniques.

In addition to transporting patients, Guardian Air also serves as an ICU in the sky with equipment that includes maternal fetal monitors, isolettes, Hamilton Tl ventilators and intra-aortic balloon pumps.

With a focus on safety and quality care, Guardian Air has been continuously accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems since 1996; is a member of Arizona's High Risk Perinatal/Newborn Intensive Care Program; and is certified by the Arizona Perinatal Trust. Every crew member has earned advanced qualifications as a Certified Flight Nurse or Certified Flight Paramedic, or carries Critical Care or Emergency Nurse certification.
