University of Montevallo students receives awards

More than 1,100 students at the University of Montevallo were recognized during the spring semester for outstanding leadership, scholarship and service. Individual departments and campus organizations held receptions and other events honoring these exceptional students, most of whom received more than one award.

Among those recognized was Alexia Johnson of Arlington, who was accorded Highest Honors, presented to full-time undergraduate students who have completed at least 12 semester hours at the University of Montevallo and whose cumulative UM grade-point average is a 3.80 or better.

Johnson also received the Freshman Leadership Scholarship, awarded to outstanding high school students who have displayed leadership qualities while mamtaining high academic standards. The scholarship is renewable by maintaining a 3.25 cumulative GPA.

Maggie Spiller of Demopolis was awarded Highest Honors. Highest Honors are accorded to full-time undergraduate students who have completed at least 12 semester hours at the University of Montevallo and whose cumulative UM grade-point average is a 3.80 or better.

Spiller also received the Montevallo Ambassador Program Scholarship, awarded to entering freshmen based on high school GPA, an ACT score of 30 or above and an interview. The scholarship is renewable with a minimum cumulative 3.25 GPA.

William Stephens of Dixons Mills was accorded the Academic Recognition Scholarship, given to entering freshmen with an ACT score of 24 or equivalent SAT score. These scholarships are renewable with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA

Shelby Western of Demopolis received Honors. Honors are accorded to full-time undergraduate students who have completed at least 12 semester hours at the University of Montevallo and whose cumulative UM grade-point average is between 3.50 and 3.80.

Western also was awarded the Community College President's Scholarship, presented to qualified transfer students from Alabama two-year colleges with a 3.25 GPA. The scholarship is renewable by maintaining a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA at UM.
