Marengo Academy (10-1) faces a formidable foe Friday in the AISA AA state championship game in top-ranked Edgewood Academy (12-0).

The Wildcats advanced to their seventh straight AISA championship game with 41-13 win Friday, Nov. 14, over Wilcox Academy.

Edgewood enters Friday's game riding a 57-game winning streak, including four consecutive state championships.

Edgewood boasts talent at every position, meaning the Longhorn defense will be tested.

Offensively, Edgewood is led by Quarterback Ryan Bottoms, a transfer from Pensacola High School, who completed 18 for 21 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown in the win over Wilcox Academy.

Running back Josh Crawford, who said "big time players step up in big time games, is a workhorse in the Wildcat backfield. Crawford rushed for 104 yards on 16 carries and scored three touchdowns last week. The third touchdown was the 100th of Crawford's career. He also caught three passes for 44 yards.

Running back Herman McKenzie complements Crawford. McKenzie rushed seven times for 110 yards and two touchdowns last week, while hauling in five passes for 51 yards.

The Wildcat defense has allowed only 53 points all year and has allowed no opponent to score more than 14 points.

Keith Johnson, the team's leading tackier, anchors the Edgewood defense. Johnson recorded 14 tackles, forced'two fumbles, and recovered one last week.

Nick Oates and Jesse Benton also added eight tackles apiece against Wilcox Academy.

The top Wildcat receivers are Daniel Green, who caught four passes for 42 yards, and Tyler Matthews, who had two receptions for 68 yards last week.

The Wildcats, who have won the last four straight championships, have reached the finals eight of the last 11, seasons.

Marengo Academy will counter with a rugged defense led by Shade Pritchett and Cason Cook and a ground-oriented, yet explosive offense, led by Hayden Huckabee and Weldon Aydelott.
