Marengo Academy rips Clarke Prep 42-8, heads for championship game in Troy

Marengo Academy (10-1) breezed into the AISA AA state championship game Friday, Nov. 14, with a 42-8 pounding of Clarke Prep. The win marked the second time this season the Longhorns have defeated the Gators.

The Longhorns, winners of the Class A state title in 2013, will now square off with Edgewood Academy, a team on a 57-game winning streak and winners of four consecutive state championships, at Troy University Friday.

Marengo Academy head coach Robby James will be going after his 10th state championship.

Last Friday's win over Clarke Prep started with a bang when Hayden Huckabee returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown. The PAT failed and the Horns led 6-0.

On Clarke Prep's first series, Cason Cook blocked a Gator punt and the Horns took over at the Clarke Prep 32. On the first snap, Josh Holifield found daylight and raced in to score. Hayden Huckabee scored the two-point conversion and the Horns led 14-0.

In the second quarter, Carson Huckabee recovered a Clarke Prep fumble at the Gator 32. Hayden Huckabee scored on the first snap after the turnover and Kyle Friday kicked the PAT for a 21-0 lead.

Just before halftime, Holifield added a 3-yard touch-; down run, Friday kicked the. PAT and the Horns led 28-0.

Marengo Academy increased its lead in the third quarter on Hayden Huckabee's 50-yard scoring run. Friday's kick was good to make it 35-0.

Weldon Aydelott closed out the scoring for the Horns on a 35-yard run in the fourth quarter. Friday's PAT gave the Horns a 42-0 lead.

Marengo Academy will play-at 12 noon Friday for the state title.
