Desert Senita Community Health Center is celebrating National Health Center Week, August 10-14 with several local activities.

Tuesday, August 11, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the DSCHC conference room — Jane Canon RN, Quality Improvement Manager, will offer a program about Seasonal, Fresh, & Local Foods. Those attending may taste some local flavors and learn more about the fresh foods available from our area.

Wednesday, August 12, from 1 to 3 p m Prucilla Krznarich from Sheltering Ajo, will be in the DSCHC main lobby to answer questions about Sheltering Ajo and the services they offer.

Thursday, August 13, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Ajo Food Pantry Melanie Daniel, DSCHC Outreach Coordinator will offer ideas about planning a weekly food budget and how to incorporate fresh food.

The week honors Federally Qualified Health Centers, including DSCHC, which is one of many organizations nationwide applied and qualified to receive grant funds under Section 330 of the Public Health Service Act.

Canon says these health centers provide comprehensive services to underserved populations. Some requirements include a sliding fee scale, a quality improvement program, and a local governing board of directors of whom 51% are health center patients representing the service area demographics.

DSCHC provides primary care services, behavioral health, dentistry, pharmacy, Women, Infants and Children (WIC) services and full time laboratory and x-ray. Eye care was recently added and DSCHC continues to provide biweekly ultrasound services and a monthly visiting cardiologist.

Outreach services are also a FQHC requirement, which is why Melanie Daniel has arranged the three activities for the community in celebration of the annual NHCW, noted Canon.

"DSCHC is proud to be a Federally Qualified Health Center and honored to serve you. We hope to see you at these Health Center Week events," said Canon. She invites anyone who has not visited DSCHC, to stop by and she will gladly escort visitors on a tour.
