Funding will aid Jail Trail improvements

Participating businesses in ONE for the VERDE are providing $2,420 in funding for Phase II of improvements to the Jail Trail in Cottonwood.

The Jail Trail, located on Arizona State Parks land, is a greenway loop linking Old Town Cottonwood to the Verde River and its Fremont Cottonwood and Goodding Willow gallery forest. The trail is open to hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians.

The main entrance to the Jail Trail, the Gateway to the Verde River, is located in Old Town Cottonwood. The trail yields great recreational and economic benefits to residents, tourists and businesses.

Jail Trail Improvements is a multi-phase project that includes trail widening, trail surfacing and signage.

Rhase II includes trail widening and basic signage. This project will provide jobs for work crews comprised of veterans and youth groups, as well as opportunities for community volunteers to pitch in and help.

Improvements made to the Jail Trail will provide an opportunity for tourists and locals alike to enjoy quality time in an outdoor setting while learning about nature. Having an enhanced natural area adjacent to a well-preserved downtown, has been shown to enhance long-term economic activity.

ONE for the VERDE is a partnership of community-minded, local businesses in the Verde Valley dedicated to preserving streams, which support a healthy economy. The partnership funds projects in education, recreation, restoration and water conservation.

ONE for the VERDE program coordinator Carrie King, stated, "This project is another great example of local businesses coming together to support a legacy project that showcases how the Verde River and her tributaries can support a healthy economy and bring awareness to our entire watershed. It is about generating steady revenue for the entire Verde Valley, and we can't do that without all our rivers and streams."
