At 4:09 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, a deputy from the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office made a traffic stop on Yuma Circle Drive in Verde Villages near Cottonwood for a traffic-equipment violation. A second deputy arrived shortly thereafter to assist.

While the six occupants of the stopped vehicle, a Jeep SUV, were being questioned, one subject, 19-year-old Ebin Lamont Proctor of Cottonwood, fled on foot. He was chased by a deputy. Within a few moments, YCSO dispatch received a report from one of the deputies of shots fired.

The preliminary investigation shows the deputy got into a physical altercation with the suspect, who sustained a fatal injury from a gunshot. The deputy sustained non-life threatening injuries, was transported to a local hospital, treated and released.

Five additional suspects are under investigative custody.

All of the suspects aboard the Jeep SUV including the deceased, are male; one of them is a juvenile. All are local residents.

The investigation has been turned over to the Arizona Department of Public Safety Officer Involved Shooting team.
