A SEMI-TRUCK FIRE on the southbound side of the Interstate 17 at mile post 284 brought three Camp Verde Fire District units to the scene at approximately 6:20 a.m., Aug. 19. When fire crews arrived, they found both the semi-truck and tractor trailer on fire. The engine compartment and cab were fully involved, and flames were extending into the front portion of the trailer. Fire crews extinguished the fire and prevented any further extension into the trailer. The driver of the truck was not injured. The cause of the fire is unknown. Interstate 17 southbound was closed for approximately 30 minutes while crews performed suppression operations and clean up although traffic was backed up passed Montezuma Castle Highway until approximately 4 p.m. due to the towing away of the destroyed truck and trailer.
