On Oct. 13, just before 4 p.m., Yavapai County Sheriff Department deputies were called to the Diamond Ranch turnoff on Forest Road 618, near the Beaver Creek Campground, for an incident regarding two injured quad riders.

Deputies determined that both quad riders were going south on FR 618 when the lead driver attempted a turn. Due to excessive dust created during the turn, the driver of the second quad was unable to see clearly and struck the first quad which had overturned. Exact speed at the time of the collision is unknown and alcohol impairment may be a factor.

At the time of the call for help, witnesses indicated the driver of the first quad was unconscious but breathing. He was eventually airlifted to Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment. The second man received ground transportation to Flagstaff Medical Center with an apparent broken thumb and leg along with head lacerations.

The man who was airlifted was from Phoenix; the other driver was from Mesa. Neither were wearing a helmet.
