Cartel labs ship liquid methanol in fuel tanks

West Alabama's Drug Task Force brought an 18-wheeler to the Demopolis impound yard after it was stopped on the interstate near Eutaw Tuesday night, June 23.

Clint Sumlin, head of the task force, explained the truck's fuel tank still had lot of methanol in it after it had dropped most of the load. In discussing the procedure for making crystal methamphetamine, Sumlin estimated the tank would hold enough methanol for somebody to make 500 pounds of crystal meth.

He calculated this would be a wholesale value of $1.8 million.

The law officer said he didn't want to discuss too much of the details because this is an investigation that is still going on.

When asked about the effects crystalmeth has on the human mind, Sumlin recalled that alzheimer's, paranoia, and mental illness are results of long term use of the illegal drug.

In talking about why the methanol is shipped in liquid form, Sumlin said the big illegal meth labs in Mexico decided this was the best way to slip it through. This is a common practice now.
