High winds knock out power for some county residents

CopyTwo major power outages in one day kept Mason County PUD 3 busy through the early hours of March 2.
During the first outage, which began Monday morning at 11:45 a.m., PUD 3 and personnel from the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) restored high-voltage electricity to a substation west of Shelton that serves nearly 2,700 customers. The outage appears to have been related to a problem with power lines just south of BPA's substation in the Mountain View area of Shelton. Power was restored at 12:30 p.m., according to PUD 3.
The second outage response was due to a strong windstorm that tore through Mason County Tuesday afternoon.
A wind gust of 66 mph registered at Shelton's Sanderson Field at 2:17 p.m. Gusts of 40 miles per hour or higher were recorded throughout the afternoon.
Nearly 4,700 PUD 3 customers lost power in the windstorm, with the first calls coming just past 2 p.m.
The hardest hit area was the Tahuya Peninsula, where about 3,400 customers were affected. PUD crews were in the mop-up stage of restoration by 2 a.m. Wednesday morning.
