Deputies find squalid conditions, dead dogs at home in Belfair
The Mason County Sheriffs Office removed dozens of animals from a filthy Belfair home Sunday night after responding to a request for a welfare check on its elderly residents.
Deputies arrived at 5:40 p.m. to the home in the 100 block of East Blackhawk Court after receiving reports that the home's residents were not answering their front door to expected visitors, according to the Sheriffs Office.
Authorities found a man and a woman, both in their late 60s and both in need of medical attention, according to the Sheriffs Office. Both were taken to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton.
Deputies also found between 30 and 40 Pekinese dogs, birds, cats and snakes in the residence, along with several dead dogs. The house was full of feces from the various animals, according to the Sheriffs Office.
Deputies wore hazardous materials suits while in the residence. Animal control officers from Thurston and Kitsap counties responded to assist the Sheriffs Office and to find temporary homes for the animals.
