County earns title by committing to employ vets

Governor bestows honor during Rock Rapids visit Six road signs posted along highways leading into Lyon County declare its designation as a Home Base Iowa community.

While passing motorists may not know what Home Base Iowa is or means, they likely sense it's something special.

And it is. On Oct. 27 Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad proclaimed Lyon County as a Home Base Iowa community during a gathering at Glynlyon in Rock Rapids.

He addressed the standing-room-only crowd, which included city, county and state officials, business representatives and veterans living in Lyon County.

"Home Base Iowa allows our state the unique opportunity to make sure veterans have the opportunity for full employment and become contributing members of communities across our state," Branstad said.

Sixty businesses in Lyon County have signed on as Home Base Iowa businesses, indicating they are willing to hire veterans over the next five years.

Glynlyon is one of them. Vice-president Tami Murray spoke on behalf of those businesses at last Tuesday's gathering.

"I'm so excited to work together with other businesses to attract veterans to our fine county, to Rock Rapids, Iowa, and ultimately, to the state of low a," Murray said. "I lookfor-ward to what this program has to offer all of us." What Is Home Base Iowa?

Home Base Iowa communities are those that have demonstrated a dedication and history of embracing military veterans and easing their transition back into civilian life with jobs for vets and their families.

Bringing Them All Home

Jared Ageson, Lyon County Veterans Affairs administrator, served in the Iraq War.

One of the most exciting and scariest times of a vet's life, he said, is deployment.

"A sturdy job is the foundation to veteran health, really. If you don't have a job and you don't have money, everything starts declining in a hurry," Ageson said.
