The Rocky Mountain FFA Environmental and Natural Resources Team placed 12th out of 42 teams at the FFA National Convention held in Louisville last week. The team consisting of TaiLyn Miller, Bonnie Bates, Lily Myers and Jennifer Parker took top honors in the event, with Miller Bates and Myers recognized as Silver Emblem Individuals and Parker as a Gold Emblem Individual. Additionally, Parker placed 10th overall as an individual, earning a $400 award.

Christin and Eric Shorma were their coaches. More than 65,000 FFA members were in attendance at the convention.

According to chapter advisor Christin Shorma some highlights of convention included an address from Major General Arnold Fields and Dr. Connie Baggett to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the FFA merging with New Farmers of America, an agricultural leadership organization in segregated African American schools, and a special address to the membership by first lady Michelle Obama.

Team member Myers explained how the team participated in eight different activities. "On the first day of the competition, each member wrote a letter to the editor regarding a fictional environmental scenario," explained Myers. "They then proceeded to their team activity. The team activity requires each state to analyze and solve a scenario related to agriculture. Each team had to recommend a way to fix the issue, then present the idea to a panel of judges. The judging panel was comprised of experts in agriculture, such as members of the NRCS.

"The second day of competition was much longer than the first. All of the teams competed in their separate practicum. The contest required practicums in waste management, water quality, soil profiling and GPS. After the practicums, the states moved on to the identification and written exam activities."
