Fallen firefighters memorialized Oct. 16
The law requires the U.S. flag to be lowered in tribute only a few times each year, including the observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.
On Oct. 16, 2001, President George W. Bush approved legislation requiring the U.S. flag to be lowered to half-staff on all federal buildings to memorialize fallen firefighters. Public Law 107-51 requires this action to occur annually in conjunction with observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.
U.S. flags across the country will be lowered on Sunday, Oct. 16, to recognize and commemorate the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives while protecting their communities. Local communities and businesses are encouraged to follow this example.
Additionally this year, the bells of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Chapel will ring tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The Verde Valley Fire District encourages places of worship throughout the Verde Valley to join them in a moment of remembrance, a prayer or other tribute, and ringing of their bells during their Sunday religious services Oct. 16 to recognize the brave men and women who died in service to their communities, and also recognize those who carry on the proud tradition.
