Taylor slips past Dawgs

Both the JV and freshman boys basketball squads played well in their district openers last Friday night. Burnet hosted Taylor and the Ducks used fourth quarter advantages to slip past both Burnet teams. The JV Dawgs lost, 40-27 and the freshman team lost, 68-65.


The freshman Bulldogs opened district play with a fantastic first quarter. They combined efforts to score 23 points while holding Taylor to just 15 for a nice early lead. Ross

Giesenschlag and Eric Paye each hit three-pointers in the opener and Paye totaled a team leading eight points in the period.

Taylor flipped the script on Burnet in the second. Their hands got hot and they posted 18 points while holding the Dawgs to just eight to take a slight lead at the break, 33-31.

Burnet shot very well in the third. Paye hit his second three-pointer of the game and with the help of Ryan Jackson, Giesenschlag, Alfredo Lopez, and Zach Ferguson the Dawgs pulled within one point with and 18 point quarter, 50-49.

Bumet fought hard in the fourth period and did a nice job scoring 16 points led by Jud Roy's seven, but the Ducks posted 18 and scraped by with a 68-65 victory.

Giesenschlag led with 18 points followed by Paye, 15; Roy, 13; Ferguson, 13; Jackson, four; and Lopez, two. JV

The JV Bulldogs kept things close through the first three quarters of play against Taylor in Friday's district opener. Micah Snow, Ben Kelly, Gavin Murphy, Cole Younger, and Reid Burton all posted points in the first half.

Burnet used a couple of three-pointers by Jordan Godfrey and Kelly, as well as two free throws by Burton to win the third period 8-5 and cut Taylor's lead to just five points.

The Bulldog's could not slow the Duck's offense attack in the fourth and al4-6 Taylor advantage led to a 40-27 victory.

Kelly scored seven points to lead the way for Burnet. He was followed by Burton, six; Younger, four; Snow, four; Godfrey, three; and Harrison Stewart, one.

The Bulldogs will host Liberty Hill this Friday with games starting at 5:15 p.m.
