Public comment is currently being sought on a proposed telecommunications facility located just west of Sedona on property under Yavapai County jurisdiction.

AT&T Mobility plans to construct a 99-foot tall mono-pine telecommunications tower at a new location at 6701 W. SR 89A. A compound will be constructed around the tower for associated equipment, according to a public notice issued by Cardno ATC, a national third-party consulting agency.

The proposed telecommunications site is located near the Sedona Shadows senior living subdivision west of Lower Red Rock Loop Road.

County officials are monitoring the project during the public, involvement process Yavapai County Director of Development Services Steve Mauk said. Following publiccomment, the project will go before the Yavapai County Planning and Zoning Commission.

"This is what's called a stealth tower, or a pine tower," Mauk said. "It's designed to take on the appearance of a pine tree. It's pretty common. There's a lot more around than people realize. They do a pretty good job at masking them, not just as pine trees, but they use other technologies as well."

Following the public hearing process, Mauk said property owners within 1,000 feet of the proposed tower also have to be notified.

"After they gather input from the public, they come to us and apply, in this case, for a conditional use permit. That permit goes out to several reviewing agencies who will have an opportunity to comment on any concerns they have, along with comments from the public, are assimilated into the staff report and forwarded to the planning and zoning commission," Mauk said.

The commission, he said, reviews the proposal, meets with the applicant for the project and meets with anyone from the public who attends the meeting where the topic is discussed.

"The commission makes a recommendation to the [Yavapai County] Board of Supervisors to either approve or deny the request. The Board of Supervisors makes the ultimate decision," Mauk said. "The process of the application, from inception to the decision, can be as much as six months."

Public comments are currently being sought on the proposed facility, specifically in relation to the effects on historic properties located near the property. Call (480) 355-4671 or email Brita DeWitt at brita.dewitt@cardno. com.

DeWitt could not be reached for comment as of press time.
