The federal and state Safe Drinking Water Act regulations require community public water systems to take many actions to protect source water and provide safe drinking water.

In 2012, a number of water operators fully complied with SDWA requirements based on the type of water used, the size of the community, and the type of treatments applied. These operators have been presented with a Certificate of Compliance by the North Dakota Department of Health. A letter of commendation has also been sent to their respective city council, board of directors, or system owner recognizing their efforts. The following local operators have been recognized for their work: Dell Beach, city of Beach; Carl Granat, city of Golva; Rick L. Olson, city of Sentinel Butte; Greg Labelle, Home On The Range - Lee Roy Roller, city of Belfield; Michael Tank, city of Medora; and Floyd Hurt, city of South Heart.
