Food banks will get produce via grant
The Verde Food Council recently received a grant that provides funding for two local food banks to purchase fresh produce directly from local growers.
Each of two food banks, Cornville Mission and Food Bank and Beaver Creek Food Bank, will receive $1,000 per month from April through June to purchase produce directly from local growers. These food banks will then distribute the food to their local recipients on the days they are open.
Delivery arrangements and specific items to be purchased will be determined directly between the grower and food bank contact. It is the hope of the Verde Food Council that the new relationships opened up by this program will create a continuing dialogue between local growers and food banks and even initiate the beginnings of Farm-to-School programs throughout the Verde Valley.
Anyone wanting to participate in the food batik programs is asked to contact Karin Ward, Beaver Creek Food Bank, at 567-4631 or Greg Roeller, Cornville Food Bank, at 254-7069.
The Verde Food Council is proud to support local growers by initiating programs that create win/win scenarios between growers and different facets of the community.
