Former AFHS teacher sentenced for sexual battery of a minor
Former American Falls High School teacher Zenna Galeria was sentenced on Thursday, Jan. 12, after pleading guilty in November to the charge of felony sexual' battery of a minor between 16 and 17 years of age per Idaho code (18-1508A). The charge carries a maximum punishment of 25 years in prison.
Galeria's sentence includes 45 days in the Power County Jail, with 14 of those days to be served consecutively and the rest served within one year, five years of probation, and registering as a sex offender for the next ten years.
Last July, the high school administration notified the Power County Sheriff's Office of possible inappropriate contact concerning one of their teachers and a student, and an investigation was started. The investigation revealed a relationship between Galeria and a 17-year-old male student at the school.
The report on the investigation states that Galeria and the juvenile male student had a relationship with one another for approximately five months last year, which started with the student and Galeria texting and talking to one another over the last half of the 2011 school year.
Idaho law states if a relationship between a minor between the ages of 16 and 17 and an adult takes place, the adult cannot be five or more years older than the minor. The report filed with Power County Prosecutor Randy Kline requested charges for violation of this law. Galeria turned 23 in April of last year.
Galeria has cooperated fully with the investigation and is currently not teaching or coaching at any school activities. She is reported to be in counseling voluntarily.
