Entire week of events planned for veterans

Macon County will observe Veteran's Day with a week-long celebration. The Veteran's Day Awareness Week will provide citizens throughout Macon County an opportunity to recognize and honor local veterans.

On Monday, Nov. 9, Macon County School students will make cards to be delivered to Veterans in the nursing homes and the Veterans Hospital. Although the project is for the children, anyone can participate by making or purchasing cards to give to veterans.

Tuesday, Nov. 10 will be the Veteran's Day parade and program. The parade route will be from Burger King to the Downtown Square and will start at noon. All participants are asked to in the empty lot next to Burger King at by 11:30 a.m. Organizers are asking for participants from the Tuskegee University Homecoming Parade to be a part of the Veteran's Day parade.

Wednesday, Nov. 11 is Veteran's Day and the National Park Service will be having a program at 1 p.m. in Hanger 2 at the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site.

Thursday, Nov. 12 there will be a community cook-out on the Tuskegee Square. All veterans and citizens are encouraged to come to the Square for the community cook-out and fish fry. Volunteers are still needed to go fishing to provide fish for the event. Also, citizens with lakes and ponds are asked to allow their property to be used for the Pish lor Veterans. Cooks are also needed to fry the fish (please have your own fryer and utensils) for the cook-out

On Wednesday, Nov. 11, there will be a Veterans Meet and Greet with free food for veterans at the District 4 Community Center, 1200 County Road 27, Tuskegee.

On Friday, Nov. 13, all citizens are encouraged to attend the Veteran's Day Program at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS) Campus in Tuskegee.

Citizens are asked to use green light bulbs on front porches and security lights the week of Veteran's Day to honor veterans.

Closings, Garbage Schedule, Tuskegee News' Delivery

The City of Tuskegee will observe Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11 at a holiday.

If your garbage pick-up day is Wednesday, Nov. 11, it will be collected on Thursday, Nov. 12. Thursday's and Friday's normal garbage collection will be on Friday, Nov. 13. Monday and Tuesday collection will not be affected by the holiday.

Macon County government is closed for Veteran's Day, as well as the City of Tuskegee and the Towns of Franklin, Notasulga and Shorter. All local banking institutions — PNC, Liberty and Tuskegee Federal Credit Union — will close on Wednesday, Nov. 11 in honor of Veteran's Day.

Also closed will be Macon County schools and the United States Post Office.

Because the Post Office will be closed on Nov. 11, Tuskegee News' subscribers won't receive their papers by mail until Friday, Nov. 13, rather than Thursday, Nov. 12.

Papers will be delivered to racks and vendors and be at the Tuskegee News' office on Wednesday, Nov. 11 on a normal schedule.
