Miners hit the mat in Benson; capture championship at Coolidge

The San Manuel Miner varsity wrestling team got off to a sluggish start in their mid-week matches at the Benson Multi-Meet on Jan. 11. In their first match against the host team Benson, the Miners wrestled slow and lethargic, but managed to get the victory 47 -32.

They picked up the pace against Morenci in the second match of the evening and even though they lost, it was a close match after eight bouts with the score of 15-18. The Wildcats took the match 48-21. Coach Yubeta said, "The match got away from us with the two forfeits and the Morenci Wildcats picking up big pins."

The last match of the night pitted the Miners against the Globe Tigers. San Manuel recorded six pins and lost only one head-to-head match to pick up the win 60-21.

Wrestling at 106 pounds, Frankie Tamayo lost by decision 2 - 10 to Benson, lost by fall in : 15 to Morenci and won by forfeit over Globe for a record of 1 - 2.

Wrestling at 113 pounds, Orlando Duarte lost by fall in 3:06 to Benson, lost by fall in 1:13 to Morenci and won by forfeit over Globe for a record of 1-2.

Wrestling at 120 pounds, Carlos Duarte won by forfeit over Benson, won by fall in 5:34 over Morenci and won by fall in 1:09 over Globe for arecord of 3 - 0.

Wrestling at 126 pounds, Wyatt Pefia won by forfeit over Benson, won by decision 9-2 over Morenci and won by fall: 19 for a record of 3 - 0.

Wrestling at 138 pounds, Adrian Torres won by forfeit over Benson, won by decision 7-0 over Morenci and won by fall in 5:45 over Globe for record of 3-0.

Wrestling at 145 pounds, Colten Smith won by decision 15-0 over Benson, won by decision 7-2 over Morenci and won by fall in :28 over Globe for a record of 3-0.

Wrestling at 152 pounds, Martin Seballos won by fall in :46 over Benson, lost by decision 2 - 4 to Morenci and won by forfeit over Globe for a record of 2 - 1.

Wrestling at 160 pounds, Vincent Valdez lost by decision 2 -14 to Benson, lost by decision 9 -11 to Morenci and lost by decision 12 -13 for a record of 0-3.

Wrestling at 170 pounds, Jesus Torres lost by fall in 5:31 to Benson, lost by fall in 4:44 to Morenci and won by fall in :21 over Globe for a record of 1 - 2.

Wrestling at 195 pounds, Anthony Salazar won by forfeit over Morenci and lost by fall in 1:21 to Globe for a record of 1-1.

Wrestling at 220 pounds, Gilbert Boyer won by forfeit over Benson, won by fall in 3:20 over Morenci and won by fall in 1:25 over Globe for a record of 3 - 0.

Wrestling at 285 pounds, Rene Ortega won by forfeit over

Benson, lost by fall in 1:21 to Morenci and won by forfeit over Globe for a record of 2 -1.

The weight divisions of 132 pounds and 182 pounds were open.

On Jan. 13 and 14, the San Manuel High School wrestling team ran away with most of the hardware in Coolidge, as they captured the 15th Annual Coolidge Invitational Championship, an Outstanding Wrestler plaque for Colten Smith, nine individual medals, and the Team Sportsmanship Award as selected by the referees.

Colten Smith wrestling at the 145 pound weight class and Carlos Duarte wrestling at the 120 pound weight class walked away with Individual Championships in their respective divisions.

San Manuel recorded 59 pins while only allowing nine against them and scored 449 points in their duals and gave up a mere 128 points.

The Miners dominated the team competition on their way to the first place finish defeating all 18 opponents: San Manuel'60 Globe 18, San Manuel 55 Williams Field 10, San Manuel 48 Vista Grande 21, San Manuel 62 Maricopa 12, San Manuel 60 Valley Christian 15, San Manuel 60 Santa Cruz 17, San Manuel 53 Catalina Foothills

At 120 pounds Carlos Duarte brought home a championship, winning by decision 5-4 over Begay from Higley and 7 - 3 over Molina from Tolleson.

At 126 pounds, Wyatt Pena finished in second place with a win over Chavez from Coolidge with a 12 - 3 decision and lost by default to Lopez from Vista Grande.

At 138 pounds, Adrian Torres placed second with a 17 - 0 decision win over Siegrist from Canyon State and lost 3 - 9 by decision to Franco from Maricopa.

At 145 pounds, Colten Smith grabbed a championship by pinning South from Higley in 1:59 and pinned Land from Williams Field in 4:14.

At 152 pounds, Martin Seballos placed in fourth, losing to Moore from Coolidge in a 10 - 14 decision and losing in another decision 5 -12 to Bacon from Valley Christian.

At 160 pounds, Vincent Valdez brought home a sixth place medal with a 8 - 9 loss to Alcantar from Tolleson.

At 170 pounds, Jesus Torres placed fourth, losing by decision to Porter from Florence 1 - 5 and 2 - 9 to Rosenberg from Catalina Foothills.

At 195 pounds, Anthony Salazar finished in second place by pinning Anger from Pima in 4:29 and lost by fall in :55 to Echevarria from Globe.

At 220 pounds, Gilbert Boyer placed second, pinning Mendoza from Tolleson and losing by fall to Yazzie from Higley in 5:02. Coach Yubeta said, "The head coach from Higley High School stated it best. He said, 'Your wrestlers are tough on the mat, but clean and don't take cheap shots. They use a variety of moves and pinning combinations. They show a lot of class, and genuinely show sportsmanship when they come to the comer to shake the coaches hand, by looking us in the eyes and having a conversation.'"

When you can win a team championship and receive the positive accolades from not only the coaches, but the referees, you can say that the Miner wrestlers are "champions with class."

The Miners will travel to Globe today, and then will head to Tucson to take part in the Salpointe Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
