Ajo food festival in planning stage
Plans for the "Authentically Ajo" Regional Food Festival are well under way, according to organizers of the event. Set for March 8 in the Plaza, the festival is being organized by the Ajo Regional Food Partnership to celebrate the expanding gardening movement in the community and to highlight local production of healthy foods.
The collaborative work of the Ajo Regional Food Partnership has been funded by the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona the past four years.
"Our group welcomes the addition of new members interested in our mission to expand local food production and promote healthy eating in our region," said Gayle Weyers.
Local organizations belonging to the food partnership are the Ajo Center for Sustainable Agriculture, the Ajo Community Garden Consortium, Ajo Botanical Company, Desert Senita Community Health Center, Ajo Unified School District with its Edible Schoolyard Garden, Loma Bonita Orchard and Garden, International Sonoran Desert Alliance with its Get Going, Get Growing intern program, Salazar-Ajo branch library's seed bank, along with several representatives from the Tohono O'odham Nation.
