Local artist has display at Hillsboro Library
Mary Moore "Sissy" McLaughlin's paintings will be on display at the Hillsboro Public Library until February 3.
McLaughlin has deep roots in Pocahontas County, although she and her sister, Ginger, were raised around the world in a military family, traveling to 30 countries, including the United States when she was 12.
She continued the "gypsy life," living in Montreal, San Francisco, Creede, Colorado, Boston, Massachusetts, and Richmond, Virginia.
McLaughlin studied painting under Bernice Cross at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and stone carving with Eadhmonn Ua Cuinn. She worked at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, and at the Preservation Society of Charleston prior to opening an antiques business in Charleston, South Carolina.
She moved to Hillsboro in the summer of 2008, and renovated an old log building that's now called "The Briar Patch," where she continues selling antiques.
