Woman left civic center Dec. 27; boater finds corpse floating near Yacht Basin entry

Boating on the Tombigbee, th& unidentified operator reported to Demopolis Police Department that a body was in the water near the yacht basin at 12:30 p. m. Sunday, Dec. 29.

Police Chief Tommie Reese would not confirm the body was Maggie Wright who was reported missing Saturday night, Dec. 21.

He ordered the corpse sent to the Alabama's Department of Forensic-Science in Montgomery for positive identification and an autopsy.

Noting that her family spent the Christmas holiday without her, Reese asked the Demopolis community to remember them in prayer.

The family had given police a description of what Maggielean Howard Wright, age 57, was wearing the night she disappeared. The body in the river was clad in black pants, white blouse, and black coat as the family had described.

Since this may develop into a criminal investigation, Chief Reese is hesitant to reveal many details.

He reportedly theorized the wind blew her body upriver into the yacht basin.

Acquaintances of Wright said after she was reported missing that "She was in the river."

The information provided by Demopolis police did not mention that this is a possible murder investigation.
