Community Action accepting application to assist with heating bill
The Community Action Agency of South Alabama has started the process of making application to assist low-income families with their heating bill. The program extends through the fall months assisting households with an allotment established by the Federal Government.
Eligible households must provide proof of combined income, before deductions, of all household members for the entire month, prior to the month they apply for assistance. Social Security Cards, Head of Household's Photo I.D., date of birth and age of each household member must also be provided to the agency. The utility bill must in the name of the head of household or the spouse and only the head of household or spouse should make the application. Proof of legal guardianship may be requested for some household members.
Monthly income cannot be in excess of the following: one person-$ 1,436; two people-$1,938; three people-$2,441; four people-$2,943. Add $502 per month for each additional household member thereafter to determine eligibility. Bank statements are no longer an acceptable form for proof of income.
Payment will be made directly to the utility company that supplies the electricity and no payments will be made to the household.
Funds are limited and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis with some appointments having already been scheduled. The number of applications taken daily is also limited due to the application process and the availability of funds. Special arrangement may be made for the elderly and physically challenged.
Deposits and reconnect fees may be limited.
