Demopolis cops catch one burglar

When burglars fled the Sun South John Deere dealership in Demopolis Thursday, Jan. 8, they drove their stolen white van through Uniontown at over 100 miles per hour.

The Uniontown police who stop little old ladies doing 65 on Highway 80 and charge them with driving 70 in a 55 zone didn't stop this van.

Demopolis police were chasing it and finally caught it in Selma after it tore down two fences and went through two yards of family homes.

According to a police report, Audre Jerome Hendon, black male of Birmingham, age 57, was the only burglar run down and caught in Selma.

He and his partners in crime had stolen XI1 chainsaws, pole saw, MM55 yard boss FC 90 Edger, 600 backpack blower, 350 backpack blower, 200 backpack blower. 55 hand held blower, 90R trimmer, FAS 56 RC-E. 420 cut off machine.

According to a report released by the Demopolis Police Department, officers (not named) responded to an alarm at the Sun South building on Highway 80 and gave chase to the white van as it sped from the parking lot Racing east on Highway 80, the burglars began throwing out the chain saws, blowers, and other stuff trying to wreck the pursuing patrol car.

A check on the van revealed that it was stolen and was connected with crimes in other parts of Alabama. In Selma, one suspect jumped out and ran but the old man was caught and cuffed.

He is charged with Burglary III, receiving stolen property I, possession of burglary tools, and attempting to elude police.

Hendon was taken to police headquarters in Demopolis, booked, and transported to the Marengo County Detention Center in Linden. He will remain in jail until a bond hearing is set.

The police report states that assisting were the Marengo County Sheriff's Department, the Dallas County Sheriffs Department, the Selma Police Department, and the Alabama State Troopers.
