Code enforcer burns cake baker's business
Valarie Winstead at 1209 Mason Ridge Drive cannot make you a cake after the recent health department order which stops her from baking for friends.
The Demopolis mother said she baked for others while she was a stay-at-home mom with her children. Her youngest, she said, is 13, so nowshe can look for other employment.
The hard boot of bureaucratic crack down came after the Demopolis Police Department hired Steven Aultman as the "code enforcer."
He went through the business licenses and Valarie Winstead's license, which she has had for years, caught his eye. He turned her and several others in to the state health department.
The state health department gave her an option of spending a lot of money on a commercial grade kitchen in a separate location or closing.
Her 12 years of baking for others has ended in Demopolis.
This has stirred some to the point they want to petition the state to rescind its order, vote the current city council out of office, and appeal to the governor for relief from "too much government."
