Demopolis chamber honors outstanding citizens for 2008

Demopolis Area Chamber of Commerce's 93rd annual banquet honored outstanding citizens with awards during the ceremony Monday, feb. 2, at the civic center..

Dr. Isaac Espy Jr., principal of Demopolis High School, was the recipient of the 2008 Citizen of the Year Award."I'm very humbled to have my name placed on the list with all of these previous winners," Espy said. "But I'm just one player in a team sport. In many ways, I feel like I was in the right place at the right time, working with the right people."

Kidd-Robbins Funeral Directors received the 2008 Business of the Year Award. Kidd Robbins Funeral Directors is the only sole proprietorship that has ever won the award.

"I want to thank my employees and everybody who helps in my business to make it a success," said Bobby Kidd, in receiving the award.

RockTenn received the 2008 Business Volunteer of the Year Award.

Tom Boggs was the recipient of the Lifetime ' Achievement Award.

"I am so thankful for the opportunities to serve you, my fellow citizens of this great city of Demopolis," Boggs said.

Lee Belcher was the recipient of the 2008 Community Spirit Award and Kirk Brooker was honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award.

The guest speaker for the event was Stephen Black, director of the University of Alabama Initiative for Ethics and Social Responsibility.
