The local homeless support committee known as Sheltering Ajo recently received a letter from Sharon Branson, chair of the Pima County Board of Supervisors, indicating the board has approved a community development block grant for public service funds for the committee in the amount of $10,000.

The funds will be used primarily to pay the salary of the Sheltering Ajo case manager along with liability insurance, worker's compensation, training, and professional development for the lone paid position on the committee. It was determined by the group that one member needed to be dedicated to the clients, and therefore salaried, because the volunteer members were always strapped for time.

Donations to Sheltering Ajo are still needed, however, to cover maintenance costs for local shelters, materials, hygiene and other supplies, food items, bus tickets, and short-term hotel stays, the latter especially for domestic violence victims. Checks may be made out to Sheltering Ajo and mailed to Ajo Federated Church, 101 Lomita Avenue, Ajo, AZ 85321.

CDBG grants are a federal program distributed through the Pima County Community Development & Neighborhood Conservation Department. The recent grant to Sheltering Ajo was facilitated by Why Ajo Lukeville Development.

In a separate development, Sheltering Ajo is partnering with Desert Senita Community Health Center to offer homeless support presentations at clinic-related events. Examples of the collaboration include handing out Sheltering Ajo brochures and business cards, and collecting canned foods and hygiene items at these events.

Daisy Farmer has offered additional supplies for the Sheltering Ajo backpack program. Case manager Prucilla Krznarich raised $55 at the Plaza's Fourth of July event, networked with community members, and received an invitation to set up an information table at Second Saturday Farmers Markets as well as at the clinic for National Health Week in August. The committee also discussed plans for a raffle and t-shirt fundraiser for the Red & White Weekend in October.
